READER’S/WRITER’S WORKSHOP (1550)
Grade 6
Sixth grade teachers teach English by incorporating the Reader’s/Writer’s Workshop that includes read-aloud, shared reading, independent reading, guided reading and reading/writing workshops. The goal of instruction is to support students in becoming independent, strategic, critical readers, writers, listeners, and speakers who communicate effectively in various forms, for various purposes, for various audiences. Grade 9
Students will receive instruction and practice in developing their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in accordance with the guidelines set in the English-Language Arts Content Standards for Ninth and Tenth Grade, published in the Reading/Language Arts Framework for California Public Schools. Students will read and write a variety of text forms, including narratives, responses to literature, expository texts, persuasive texts, business letters and technical documents, in order to begin developing an understanding of text structure, author’s purpose and content.

Students will receive instruction—using GATE identified strategies including differentiation, depth, and complexity—and practice in developing their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in accordance with the guidelines set in the English- Language Arts Content Standards for Ninth and Tenth Grade, published in the Reading/Language Arts Framework for California Public Schools. Students will read and write a variety of text forms, including narratives, responses to literature, expository texts, persuasive texts, business letters and technical documents, in order to begin developing an understanding of text structure, author’s purpose and content.

Prerequisite: Students must be Seminar identified.
The description and goals of this course correspond with those of English 1,2 but are pursued in greater depth with further complexities incorporated in all areas of language arts as outlined by GATE curriculum and differentiation of instruction.
LITERACY ADVANCEMENT ACADEMY 1,2 (1682)
Grade 9
Students below or significantly below grade level in need of extra support will be enrolled in this course in addition to English 1,2. Students are supported in achieving at grade level through opportunities to read, write, and discuss various genres (functional, narrative, expository, prose, persuasive, drama, and poetry) as well as given systematic instruction in reading and writing.

Students will receive instruction and practice in developing their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in accordance with the guidelines set in the English-Language Arts Content Standards for Ninth and Tenth Grade, published in the Reading/Language Arts Framework for California Public Schools. Students will further their skill in communicating their perspectives and reasoning, and develop an understanding of more complex devices utilized by authors. They are encouraged to enhance their analytical skills, demonstrating the use of increasingly sophisticated and complex research, organizational and revision strategies.

This course emphasizes all areas of language arts and includes the study of both fiction and non-fiction. The course is similar to English 3,4, but the learning activities are pursued in greater depth with a range of challenging texts. The curriculum is aligned with the California English Language Arts framework, which calls for a standards-based curriculum, integrating reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing skills.

Students will receive instruction and practice in developing their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in accordance with the guidelines set in the English-Language Arts Content Standards for Ninth and Tenth Grade, published in the Reading/Language Arts Framework for California Public Schools. Students advance their studies in all areas of English 1,2. Students will further their skill in communicating their perspectives and reasoning and develop an understanding of more complex devices utilized by authors. They are encouraged to enhance their analytical skills, demonstrating the use of increasingly sophisticated and complex research, organizational and revision strategies using more challenging literary and informational text and are required to write and think more critically and in-depth. AMERICAN LITERATURE 1,2* (1583)
Grade 11
This course enables students to understand that American literature reflects social, political and moral issues in the United States. Literature is studied from the first settlements to our contemporary period. Students develop proficiencies in reading, writing, speaking and listening in expressing their ideas on significant problems of American life, and in studying the communication techniques used by writers and other leaders in describing the American scene of both the past and present. Some units may be prepared in collaboration with American History 1,2.
AMERICAN LITERATURE 1,2* HONORS (1589) HP

Prerequisites: Students must earn an A or B in previous English course and have administrative approval.
The description and goals of the course correspond with those of American Literature 1,2 but pursued in greater depth with further complexities incorporated in thinking, reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will read authors more critically and discuss more deeply issues in American culture and history. Students will also be required to compose more critical, complex, and lengthy compositions at the college freshman level.

This course is designed to help students become more skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts and to become skilled writers who can compose for a variety of purposes. By their writing and reading in this course, students will become aware of the interactions among a writer's purposes, audience, expectations, and subjects, as well as the way generic conversations and resources of language contribute to effective writing. The overall purpose of the course is to enable students to read complex texts with understanding and to write prose that is rich enough and complex enough for mature readers. This course prepares students for the Advanced Placement Examination in Language and Composition. The course meets the requirements for the Diploma with Academic Distinction.
CONTEMPORARY VOICES IN LITERATURE 1,2* (1612)
Grade 12
This course explores modern world literature from the 1950s to the present. Students will study issues by authors from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities to develop an understanding of major topics and concerns worldwide and to develop an understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures. Multiple literary genres with various forms and techniques are analyzed in-depth and inter-relate with each student's writing, oral communication, and critical theory. This course may serve as an elective credit.

Prerequisite: Students must have earned an A or B in American Literature.
This course meets the requirements for academic distinction. This survey course encourages students to read for implications and to read the English classics with appreciation. The material studied is predominantly that of major impact on the literary world from the British Isles in the last 1500 years. Key writers in their various literary movements (Anglo-Saxon, Medieval, Renaissance, Age of Reason, Romantic, Victorian and the Modern Period) are researched and analyzed with the further complexities of genre and style.
ENGLISH LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION 1,2* AP (1653) HP

Prerequisite: Students must have an A or B in previous English class, teacher recommendation, and passing score on writing assessment, and administrative approval.
This Honors English course is designed to provide more challenging and effective instruction to the highest achieving seniors while preparing these students for the Advanced Placement Exam given in Literature and Composition by the College Board. Students engage in critical analysis of complex literary works and through reading, listening, speaking, and especially writing, students become aware of the characteristics of discourse through analysis and application.
