READER'S/WRITERS WORKSHOP (1550)
Sixth grade teachers teach English by incorporating the Reader’s/Writer’s Workshop that includes read-aloud, shared reading, independent reading, guided reading and reading/writing workshops. The goal of instruction is to support students in becoming independent, strategic, critical readers, writers, listeners, and speakers who communicate effectively in various forms, for various purposes, for various audiences. This course may be taught in a cluster or Seminar setting.
SOCIAL STUDIES (6520)
Sixth grade students receive a year-long program on Ancient Civilizations. In addition, students study the everyday life of people, as well as ideas that transformed the world. Many creative lessons in this area allow students to continue to incorporate and improve on their literacy skills, as well as their artistic and social skills, while completing special projects on ancient cultures.
MATHEMATICS (4002)
Sixth grade students receive a year-long mathematics program to meet their needs. The core math course expands their computational skills involving whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and the use of percentages. Students develop skills and concepts of geometry, measurement, graphing, probability and statistics, problem-solving, and analytical thinking.
SCIENCE (6006)
Focus on Earth Science. In this general science course students learn concepts in physical, life, and earth sciences, with a focus on earth science. Students conduct experiments utilizing appropriate tools, technology, and graphs and communicate their conclusions orally and in writing. Students interpret events and identify changes that occur in geologic time. They explore the interactions that occur between the various earth systems and the implications those interactions have on their daily lives. Students continue to develop their abilities to conduct inquiry, create explanations based on evidence, and understand the nature of science.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION/DANCE(5506)
Sixth grade students participate in a physical education or dance program (when available) that emphasizes the development of good physical fitness habits and skills. See “Electives.”
FINE ARTS EXPLORATORY WHEEL
This sixth grade course is designed to allow students to explore SCPA’s core fine arts courses of drama, dance, visual arts, and music appreciation. Students who, with teacher recommendation, choose chorus, instrumental music or a special dance class would not enroll in this course.
SPECIAL EDUCATION
Special Education is designed to provide academic support for students who qualify. In the Resource Specialist Program, students receive instruction within the general education setting. In the Special Day Class Program, students receive instruction outside the general education setting for English, math and social studies. They are mainstreamed for science at the case manager’s discretion. While all art electives are taken within the general education setting, the student’s case manager will determine placement in electives outside general education.
ELECTIVES
All 6th graders participate in the Fine Arts exploratory wheel to allow them to explore SCPA’s core fine arts courses. Some students, with teacher recommendation and/or audition, may choose instead to specialize in Instrumental Music (Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Band or Orchestra); Choral Music (Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced); or Dance (General Dance or Dance Foundations taken as P.E. credit). |
