SCPA is the premier arts high school for the San Diego Unified School district. It is devoted to fostering excellence and interest in the arts. The audition process for entering SCPA at the high school level ensures that students enrolled are genuinely interested in the arts and have the passion and determination to make the most of the school’s unique training, encouragement, and support while balancing the demands of an academic and arts program. All prospective high school students are required to audition. Middle school students do not audition but must complete and submit an enrollment options form to be considered for acceptance and will then be placed into a lottery system. |
Audition Dates for Admission 2010-2011 |
Auditions are held at SCPA, and are scheduled for February 20 and February 27, 2010 for admission the following September. Students applying to SCPA will be given a specific date for the audition and interview with the audition panel. |
Preparing for the Audition |
Each candidate is required to provide two (2) letters of recommendation from teachers (academic or arts, the form is available online or in the SCPA main office), a headshot or small photograph (school photo or other individual snapshot is fine) and a resume or a list detailing previous arts training and experience (you may use the online resume template or you may pick one up from the SCPA Main Office). These materials will be collected at the check-in area on the day of the audition. Study the audition requirements for your area(s) of focus and prepare for your audition. Specific requirements and rubrics for each discipline are attached. |
The Audition |
All prospective students must be prepared and on time for the audition. A make-up audition will be granted only in the case of an emergency. The parent/guardian of the auditioning student will be notified at that time of the single audition make-up date. Arrive early on audition day, appropriately dressed (see individual audition descriptions for requirements, if any), and make sure to bring all required materials including a pen or pencil for paperwork. Bring a lunch or snack and plan on being at SCPA for a minimum of two hours. Report to the check-in tables and submit your materials. After check-in, parents/guardians may wait in the library or return for the student at the end of the audition. Parents/Guardians are not allowed to view the audition.
THE WRITING COMPONENT: All prospective students will complete a Statement of Intent. The student will indicate area(s) of interest in the arts and answer a short essay question.
THE INTERVIEW: The group interview is a way for the panel to determine the candidate’s interest, desire, and goals for attending SCPA and allows prospective students to express themselves beyond the audition process professionally and enthusiastically.
THE ARTISTIC EVALUATION: In addition to the above, all prospective students will participate in an audition in at least one of the following arts disciplines as outlined on the following pages. |
Accomodations/Modifications |
Students receiving special education services will, during their audition, be permitted to use any accommodations or modifications listed on the student’s current Individual Education Plan (IEP) or the student’s section 504 plan pertinent to the audition requirements. Upon receiving notification of the audition date, please inform the SCPA Audition Coordinator of the student’s IEP or section 504 plan. |
