DANCE AUDITION
|
| How to Prepare for the Audition |
Prepare a solo demonstrating the best of your dance abilities. The solo is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your passion and talent for dance. The solo must be a minimum of thirty seconds and a maximum of one minute in length and may be in any dance style of your choosing. Make a copy of your music on CD or cassette tape to bring with you to the audition. |
| What to Bring to the Audition |
Arrive in proper dance attire: Leotards and tights are preferred; however, form-fitting workout wear and jazz pants are acceptable. Appropriate footwear is required: Ballet slippers, jazz shoes, tap, pointe shoes (if applicable) and bare feet for modern. Hair must be pulled back and securely fastened. No jewelry, gum or baggy clothing is allowed. Bring your music for your solo (we will have a CD/Cassette player available).

What to Expect During the Audition |
Although SCPA's dance department has a strong ballet component, previous ballet training is not a requirement for entrance to the program. The demonstration of a desire to study dance and the potential for success are essential. The audition is designed to allow each candidate to show his/her dance abilities in a group setting. Students will be separated into groups according to the extent and type of previous dance training.
The audition will include:
- Participation in a basic movement warm-up led by an SCPA dance faculty member in order to demonstrate coordination, musicality, strength, flexibility, and performance abilities.
- A Ballet barre, modern dance and jazz skills across the floor and in the center.
- A student-prepared solo (minimum 30 seconds, maximum 2 minutes).
Students will be evaluated in small groups. Areas of assessment will include:
- Body Alignment
- Dance technique
- Skill/potential
- Musicality
- Recall of a short movement combination
- Stage presence
- Ability to receive feedback/constructive criticism
