ELECTIVES
All 6th graders participate in the Fine Arts exploratory wheel to allow them to explore SCPA’s core fine arts courses. Some students, with teacher recommendation and/or audition, may choose instead to specialize in Instrumental Music (Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Band or Orchestra); Choral Music (Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced); or Dance (General Dance or Dance Foundations taken as P.E. credit).

This course is planned to develop essential basic skills of expression and understanding of the elements of art. Students will learn about art heritage, culture and history that will help students to make visual connections to the art standards.

Some expenses can be expected with the taking of arts classes. Students must furnish the following: pencil, eraser, 12” ruler, scissors, compass, and black fine-point felt pen. In addition some classes may require small and medium watercolor round brushes, small and medium bristle brushes, 9”x12” sketch book, and a set of 24 or 36 color pencils (Crayola, Prang, Spectra Color or Berol Prisma suggested brands). Students will be provided with materials and equipment to complete the minimum required projects. Materials obtained beyond this minimum, in pursuit of greater artistic competence, must be paid for by the individual students.

This is a pre-requisite for all other Visual/Media Arts courses. Let's explore what art is all about! Art 1,2 is a one- year course. It is designed to give students an introduction to different areas of the visual arts and an opportunity to experience common materials used in each art form. Skills in two- dimensional design will be explored and special attention will be given to the development of drawing and painting skills. The course meets the California State University Visual and Performing Arts requirement.
COLOR & DESIGN 1,2* (0241)

This is a pre-requisite for all other Visual Arts courses. Learn to be creative with color as you explore the elements and principals of design. You will discover new ways to arrange, mix and change color, and how to enrich your life using nature as a source for design ideas. Illustrate a song or a poem, explore realistic and abstract design, and learn about color symbolism and color schemes. This is a fun, yet challenging course.

This course is designed for students who have demonstrated talent in prerequisite courses. Primary emphasis is placed on drawing, composition and painting and in knowing and applying major painting techniques and styles to develop individual personal expression.
DESIGN IN MIXED MEDIA 1,2 (0244)

Prerequisites: Art 1,2 or Color & Design 1,2 with a grade of "C" or better, or teacher recommendation.
This two-semester course introduces students to the elements and principles of design which are part of the common core of knowledge and the understanding and creating fine art. The course provides students with practical experience in the production of two- and three-dimensional design art work in various media, including fiber, maché, printmaking, etc. The course meets the California State University Visual and Performing Arts requirement.
DESIGN IN MIXED MEDIA 3,4* (0246)

Prerequisites: Art 1,2 or Color & Design 1,2 and Design in Mixed Media 1,2, with a grade of “C” or better, or teacher recommendation.
This two-semester course offers further exploration into the historical background of two- and three- dimensional design art work, as well as further experience in the mixed media production techniques acquired in Design in Mixed Media 1,2. This course meets the University of California and the California State University Visual and Performing Arts requirement. This course will cycle with Three- Dimensional Design 3,4.
COMMERCIAL ART 1,2 (0201)

Prerequisites: Art 1,2 or Color & Design 1,2 with a grade of "C" or better, or teacher recommendation.
This course further develops fundamental knowledge of commercial design as applied to advertising, building upon understandings developed in advertising art. You will explore lettering, illustration, layout and package design. Other areas of creative expression will include design of trademarks and logos, posters, pamphlets, programs, and CD covers. This is a creative, challenging class that is also exciting and fun.
CERAMICS 1,2 (0231)

Prerequisites: Art 1,2 or Middle School Art 7/8.
This course provides in-depth study and work in clay. Starting with design work in form and function, instruction moves from hand-built objects to work on the potter’s wheel and glazing, decoration, and firing. A lab fee will be charged. The course meets the California State University Visual and Performing Arts requirement.

Prerequisites: Art 1,2 and Ceramics 1,2.
This course allows students to concentrate in functional wheel-thrown works o r hand-built sculpture. They learn to mix a glaze of their own making. Students will be required to have a show of their work during the second semester.

Recommendation of art teacher also required. nm,nm,nm,nm,nm,nThis course is designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement Examination for college credit. This course provides instruction for highly skilled, exceptional students in painting, drawing and 3-D design. Students may earn college credit while enrolled in this class. Preparation of a portfolio will be required along with the completion of one art project each week. This class may be taken three times: once for preparing a design portfolio; once for preparing a drawing portfolio; and once for preparing a three- dimensional portfolio. College credit may be earned twice. Students may choose to take Senior Art Studio credit instead of AP credit, but will not earn college credit or receive a weighted grade.
SENIOR ART STUDIO 1,2* (0371)

Prerequisites: "B" grade or better in Art 1,2, Drawing and Painting, Color and Design, and approval of art teacher.
This is developed to meet the needs and interests of art students with the highest achievement levels. This class will be taught along with AP Art Studio students. Students will define specific art interests in a contract AP plan with teacher in order to demonstrate their area of concentration.

Prerequisites: “A” or “B” in World History, academically able, and approval of art history teacher.
This course is designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement Examination for college credit. Through slide-illustrated lectures, field trips, discussions, and participation in special projects, students will explore the themes that have impelled artists to be creative. The course will present a historical as well as an analytical approach to art and its place in civilization. Areas of emphasis include religious, magical and musical art, personally expressive art, and analytical, political, and cultural influences on art.
PHOTOGRAPHY 1,2 (3691)

THIS COURSE IS RECOMMENDED FOR ALL STUDENTS PURSUING CAREERS IN DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY, DRAWING , PAINTING, DESIGN, MIXED MEDIA, AND WEB PAGE DESIGN.
Prerequisites: Art 1,2 with a grade of "C" or better, or teacher recommendation.
This one-year course in black and white photography will teach students basic photo techniques such as camera use, exposure control, film processing, contact printing and enlarging, use of studio lights, filters, light meters and reflectors. Students are required to furnish their own 35 mm Camera, film, paper, and other supplies (approximately $25 per semester). All film developing and printing chemistry and equipment will be furnished and maintained by the school. Challenging assignments will be given to expose students to the principles of this medium and to improve their photographic eye. Digital imaging and the use of Photoshop software will be integrated into the course. All students will be encouraged to enter the Del Mar and California State Fairs and various national photo contests to showcase their work.

Prerequisites: Photography 1,2 with a grade of "B" or higher and the consent of the instructor. Students will be asked to furnish their own 35mm camera. In addition, students are required to furnish their own film, paper, and other supplies (approximately $25 per semester).
This advanced course i s a continuation of Photography 1,2. A deeper exploration and a higher level of proficiency will be expected and an element of "risk" as a component of all work. Students will be encouraged to find their own area of interest and pursue it with a passion. Students will produce a professional portfolio by the end of the year. Desktop publishing and computerized graphic design will be integrated into the course.

This advanced digital photography course is a continuation of Photography 1,2 except a deeper exploration and a higher level of proficiency will be expected and an element of "risk" as a component of all work. Students will be encouraged to find their own area of interest and pursue it with a passion. Students will produce a professional portfolio by the end of the year. Students are required to furnish their own Digital Camera. The school will provide high-end computers and professional software to manipulate both digital and traditional black and white photographs.

This course is intended to act as a capstone class in the arts. Students pursuing an interest in Drawing, Painting, Design, Mixed Media or Photography should take Digital Art & Mixed Media in their 11th and 12th grade as a part of their Arts career path. This course provides entry-level and advanced training in the field of digital art and mixed media. Instruction covers fine art principles and concepts, as well as creation of art for commercial or personal purposes. Students learn business practices in relation to art galleries and shows. Students are required to furnish their own Digital Camera.
WEBSITE ARCHITECTURE 1-2 (4467)

THIS COURSE IS RECOMMENDED FOR ALL STUDENTS PURSUING CAREERS IN WEB PAGE DESIGN, DRAWING, PAINTING, DESIGN, MIXED MEDIA, OR PHOTOGRAPHY.
This year-long course offers student an opportunity to learn the web design process that will enable them to creative, develop, and maintain web sites. This course provides entry-level and advanced training in the field of web page design, digital art, mixed media and photography. Instruction covers fine art principles and concepts, as well as creation of Web pages for commercial or person purposes.
PUBLICATIONS /YEARBOOK (8421)

Prerequisites: 2.0 GPA with no D’s or F's, N's or U's; interview; and two written teacher recommendations.
This is a two-semester course that may be taken for more than one year. Yearbook 3,4 and 5,6 students will assume more responsibility by being placed in leadership positions and the planning of the entire yearbook. This course provides individual specialized training and production work in publishing the school yearbook. Students will: study, review formats and layout of school yearbooks; participate in planning and organizing the yearbook; establish an orderly sequence that allows completion of project that produces optimum quality and economy of time; apply basic techniques and skills of journalistic writing and procedures; participate in all yearbook advertisement and sales; schedule and arrange photo activities for inclusion; prepare layouts via computer technology.
JOURNALISM 1,2 (1960) (Newspaper)

Prerequisites: A or B in English, no N's, or U's; interview; and a teacher recommendation.
This two-semester course introduces the techniques and skills of journalistic writing, and prepares the student for participation in the school newspaper. Students work with a variety of objectives in their writing and participate in advertising campaigns.

This course is intended to provide further experience with journalistic writing. This class functions as a staff producing the school newspaper with cutting edge technology. Production assignments provide students with a range of experiences in publishing the school news.
JOURNALISM 5,6 (1964)

Prerequisites: Journalism 3,4 with a grade of B or better.
Students in this course provide the leadership and hold the key positions in publishing the school newspaper. The editor-in-chief, co-editor(s), copy editors, layout editor(s) and business manager are mainly selected from this course. These students are responsible for forming the newspaper policy, presenting a balanced report of school news, planning page composition and the overall concept and design of the school newspaper.

THIS COURSE IS RECOMMENDED FOR ALL STUDENTS PURSUING CAREERS IN THE MEDIA AND THEATER.
Film Arts is designed to give students an understanding of the art of the film. It will teach film aesthetics, the production process, and film as literature. History of film will also be a topic throughout the course. This class is NOT a movie theater. Grades are based on academic work. The course will allow students to reflect on the problems of their own lives and those of others through the treatments of film directors.

This course introduces students to the operation of video equipment and program production. Instruction emphasizes script writing, equipment operation, and production techniques. Career orientation is also emphasized. This course serves as an orientation and introduction to the senior high course, Video Production 1,2; 3,4; 5,6; 7,8.
VIDEO PRODUCTION 1,2 (8373)

Prerequisites: Citizenship and academic grade of 2.0 or better.
This course may not be repeated. Video Production is designed to give the students experience in the digital TV production field. They will learn the theory of basic station operation and program production including station management, studio positions and broadcast career orientation. The emphasis in the course will relate to producing, shooting, and editing video. Students will also be introduced to basic broadcast law, broadcast economics and network operations. Video 1-2 will require academic skills relating to math, English, and Science. Students will be required to participate in fundraising to benefit station operations.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Video Production 1,2, and citizenship and academic grade of 2.0 or better.
This non-ROP course is a continuation of Video Production 1,2. Students will expand upon the knowledge and skills covered in the previous course.

Prerequisites: An A or B in Video Production 1-2 and teacher recommendation. Must have 2.0 GPA and citizenship of G or higher.
Video Production 3-4 expands upon the knowledge and skills covered in Video Production 1-2. The students will become independent producers and be required to field and produce their own stories utilizing the same process as professional video and film producers. Much of the course is a laboratory experience polishing the student's production skills. Students will also learn the art of digital video shooting and editing. This class will also make up the SCPA Television Production Team having the responsibility for servicing the school's needs. Student grades will also be based on quality of service to the school. This is a State of California Regional Occupation Program (ROP) and students must be prepared to participate on a professional level and exhibit professional skills. Students will be required to participate in fundraising to benefit station operations.
