2009-2010 SEASON

The San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts is proud to announce its 32nd Mainstage Season!

This season will open with a special preview of the award winning play “The Yellow Boat” on December 4, 2009 at 7 pm.  This play tells the story of Benjamin Saar, a child born with congenital hemophilia, who would go on to die at the age of 8 from AIDS related complications.  As a gifted visual artist, Benjamin learned to express his physical and emotional pain through his drawings and paintings.  His story is sure to inspire the audience as it commemorates the courage of a child as he learns to sail through life’s greatest challenges.

Next, get ready to go around the world and experience holiday traditions from near and afar as our nationally recognized and award-winning choirs perform in “Holiday Travels”.  This concert promises to evoke the whimsical, endearingly poignant, and true meanings of the Holiiday season!

During the fall season, our amazing orchestra and chamber groups will once again dazzle the ear and blow your mind with their artistry.  Come see one of the most popular events of our season as our instrumental students take you on a ride through some of the worlds sometimes forgotten, but certainly never lost treasures from the classical compendium!  “Seeing the Symphony” will open on January 21st.

Also in January explore the world of the supernatural as a pool of water becomes a magical meeting place for mortals and the gods in Mary Zimmerman’s gorgeous adaptation of Ovid’s masterpiece, “Metamorphosis.”  This play, which consists of a series of vignettes, strongly focuses on the transformative power of love.  It shows that love, for better or worse, changes people and has an intrinsic power that cannot be denied.

Next, SCPA turns to the working class struggles that are the backbone of the American dream.  “Working “ is a musical based on the masterpiece by Studs Terkel  which takes the audience on a journey through the lives of a number of middle class Americans  You’ll laugh, think, feel, and maybe even cry a little as you listen to the anthems that come bursting from these unforgettable characters that shape our everyday lives.

In April the annual spring dance concert, “A Spring Odyssey”, will be taking on new forms as four nationally and globally recognized choreographers will set new pieces on our brilliant young dancers.  There is also an exciting first in our school’s history taking place in the second act … our dancers will perform a piece of classical repertoire from The Limon Dance Company!  One of Limon’s signature pieces, Missa Brevis will be staged by leader dancer Pablo Fancisco Rualcava Tovar!  Do not miss the show!

Our season will close out with a double opening:  “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Adventures in Art” on May 14th.

Our annual visual arts exhibition features the finest original works coming from unbelievably creative and technically adept young artists.  Come see the amazing diversity of works, from a wide array of forms, styles, techniques, and mediums.  Our artists work in 2D, 3D, Video, Photography, Ceramics, and more!  Add a nice bonus is it’s free!

“A Midsummer Nights Dream” tells of the darkness that haunts the good people of Athens as they struggle to find dignity, integrity, and true human commitment to love.  Shakespeare’s famous characters illuminate a journey very familiar to all human beings, the difficulties we all experience when we seek another’s heart.  This show, with its clear humor, will be sure to entertain all audiences.

Season Tickets (all 8 shows) are on sale now for $50.  Single tickets may also be purchased for $8 dollars general admission or $7 for students, military, and senior citizens.  All seats are general admission.
